Security agreement with the United States does not mean that Colombia is going to give up its sovereignty

President Álvaro Uribe also stated that cooperation agreement can not be used to interfere with other countries’ internal affairs, according to what is established in that accord.

Bariloche, Argentina, Aug 28 (SP). With security cooperation agreement Colombia does not give up its sovereignty, President Álvaro Uribe said on Friday during his participation at the Extraordinary Meeting of Unasur in Bariloche (Argentina).

“This agreement with the United States is ruled by the principle of equal sovereignty. I want to point, dear Presidents, that Colombia is not giving up its sovereignty”, the Head of State stressed.

In the same way, he highlighted that according to what was agree between the United States and Colombia, that agreement can not be used to interfere with other countries’ internal affairs.

“Beside the principle of equal sovereignty, the principle of territorial integrity is also being preserved. It is very important to highlight that the third article of that agreement states that the agreement can not be used to interfere with other countries’ internal affairs. I wan to highlight that in a very clear way in front of all of you”, President Uribe emphasized.

He insisted that United States’ access to help Colombia in the fight against ‘narco-terrorism’, is an access in which Colombia does not give up its sovereignty over no one single millimeter of its territory.
