Bogotá, July 22 (SP). Accepting the invitation of the Colombian Government, James Anaya, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people, arrives today to the country.

Anayas’ visit rests in the Government’s openness and transparency policy for human rights and to accomplish the voluntary commitments and recommendations accepted by Colombia at the United Nations Universal Periodic Review, in Geneva, Switzerland. The Special Rapporteur will be in the country until July 27.

This way, Colombia confirms its commitment with respecting and promoting human rights all over its territory and continues with its schedule of international visitors, during 2009, from special mechanisms of the United Nations.

The Rapporteur’s agenda includes meetings with the President of the Republic, the Minister of Interior and Justice, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Defense, the Attorney General, the Solicitor General, the Defender of the People, the President of the Constitutional Courts and different civil organizations, as well as some visits to Nariño and Cauca Departments.

This is the second visit to Colombia of that UN unit, in order to monitoring the first one, made by  Rodolfo Stavenhagen, between March 8 and 17 2004.
