Bogotá, May 18 (SP). 1. On Wednesday May 13, RCN Channel spread, with no evidence, a report saying that Jorge Alberto Lagos, former chief of Counterintelligence of the DAS, declared to the Attorney General’s Office that some Government employees were implicated in the illegal wiretapping. Today, May 18, El Tiempo newspaper reveals, according to the statements transcriptions of Mr. Lagos and Mr. Fernando Tabares, former chief of Intelligence of the DAS, to the Attorney General´s Office, that the Presidency never gave them instructions to make illegal tracking of politicians, journalists or judges.
2. The broadcast of RCN Channel severely damaged the moral integrity of the Government’s employees, victims of defamation, and their families, the harmony of the Colombian State’s Institutions and its Government.
3. During the last months of 2007 and the first of 2008, employees of the Casa de Nariño, received multiple requirements from journalists, specially from Semana magazine and El Tiempo newspaper, asking the reason why Mr. Ascencio Reyes was at the Casa de Nariño, as well as his possible link with a drug trafficker extradited to the United States.
4. The Security Secretary of the Casa de Nariño informed to Presidency employees about the entrance record of Mr. Reyes and the DAS informed about the legal data of this person.
5. As the media who published the investigation can tell, the Casa de Nariño employees collaborated with them, but they did not influence the content or outline of those publications.
