President Álvaro Uribe met with Guatemalan counterpart, Álvaro Colom


“We want to work to make decisive contribution in the fight against global warming”, President Uribe said in Guatemala and he added that “that’s the importance of the fight against drug trafficking. Because drug trafficking begins by using the countries just as a way of passing through, but then it destroys the jungle to grow drugs and it finishes by destroying young people”.

Ciudad de Guatemala, Oct 13 (SP). The presidents of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe Vélez, and Guatemala, Álvaro Colom, held a meeting on Tuesday in order to strengthen goodwill relations between both countries.

At the meeting, held at the office of President Colom in the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura, the heads of state talked about security and trade bilateral agreements.

Uribe arrived to the presidential palace around 8:30am. The Presidential Guard of the National Ministry of Defense welcomed him with military honors.

He also participated in the White Rose of Peace Exchange ceremony where a girl named Prili Hadasa gave him a new rose to put at the Peace Monument.

The President of Colombia arrived to La Aurora Airport of Ciudad de Guatemala around 8:10am where Guatemalan Minister of Foreign Affairs Aroldo Roda received him.

The Head of State went to the Central American Nation with the Minister of Defense Gabriel Silva; he Director of Civic Security of the National Police, General Orlando Paéz; and the Director of Presidential Agency Acciín Social, Diego Molano, among others.

Uribe Vélez highlighted elements that both countries have such as social programs as Familias en Acción and the dialogue with popular sectors.

“We have come to Guatemala, feeling a very exited and admiring its institutions, its people, its Government, and especially you, President Colom”, President Uribe said.
The Head of State said that Colombian and Guatemala want to work to make a decisive contribution in the fight against global warming.

He pointed out that “that’s the importance of the fight against drug trafficking. Because drug trafficking begins by using the countries just as a way of passing through, but then it destroys the jungle to grow drugs and it finishes by destroying young people, inciting and taking them to the dark road of consumption and crime”.
