New York, September 22 (SP). “At the environmental panel we suggested that urgent to take decisions by the Copenhagen Forum.
We have suggested that the international convention should adopt some monitoring mechanism, to evaluate partial goals, so that can evolve from theory.
Colombia contributes with half point of the world’s Growth Product and it just represents 0.37 of the world’s emissions.
While in the world, for every point of the product there is an average of 400 tons of emission, in Latin America for each point, 260 tons of emissions are being produced, and in Colombia is 250.
Colombia is a net producer of oxygen, but we have great risks arise from climate change: inundations in the Caribbean, inundations in the Pacific, inundation in the insular area, inundations in the Andean valleys; the expansion of the deserts and that could affect the agriculture that guarantees alimentary safety, defrost of our snow-covered mountains, are one of the risks of Colombia.
And we are implementing some very important actions.
Our first commitment: take care of the rainforest, 578 thousand kilometers of rainforest, which is the reason of the Forest Keepers Families. This in a unique program and we are suggesting this as a program that the international community can adopt. It could be included in the Copenhagen Convention and it is a necessary program to preserve what is left of rainforest in the world.
Colombia has incorporated another 100 thousand hectares of commercial reforestation thanks to the Democratic Security Policy and to tax incentives.
As you know, we are producing “transmilenios”, massive transportation systems in nine Colombian cities. In addition Colombia has today very important incentives for wind and solar power.
It is important to highlight the program that we have at the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, which is one of the most important environmental sanctuaries of the world, the highest mountain near to the sea. We have made great progress in there with the support of the native communities.
We promised to build them nine towns -in order to make easier for them the task to take care of the Sierra Nevada- and we have advanced in that promise. We have built seven towns and we think that is a protection belt for the Sierra, and that task will be done by its ancestral communities, and is going to help a lot.
These are some of the ideas showed in the forum of this summit against global warming, in which we just participated”.
